(30 August 2021 - FRESNO) A Kentucky Fried Chicken franchised location is set to open what the company has termed a 'Next Generation KFC' at 5380 W. Spruce Ave., in NW Fresno. The location, likely slated as a new anchor for the plaza containing Me N Ed's and adjacent to the Johnny Quik convenience store, is currently a dusty lot just north of the Herndon & Polk intersection but, if plans go through, looks to be the first of its kind in California. The prototype store would include special parking areas for food delivery services & online order customers, a completely new branding scheme and design for the location (a change from the 'American Showman' design that more than half of existing KFC locations sport), and digital order kiosks. There are a few different variants for the 'Next Generation KFC' model and some include outdoor patio dining while others, termed 'Express', don't include a dining area at all (think along the lines of a Dutch Bros drive through / walk-up location). It isn't clear which of the prototype options the NW Fresno location will utilize. A computer generated model of one prototype is available here.
